Children’s Picture Books by David Wiesner {Book Reviews}

Children's Picture Books by David Wiesner {a book review}

I recently sat down with my daughters and “read” some of David Wiesner’s books to them.

I put “read” in quotes because most of these books have little or no words.

But the pictures… well, the illustrations are breathtaking.

I was a little nervous when I first saw them.  I was afraid maybe the illustrations were too intricate to hold a preschooler’s and a toddler’s attention.

I was wrong.

My 4-year-old would ask me to tell her the story, and then we’d flip through the book again and she’d tell me the story.  My 2-year-old would point out all the little details as we read.  They both requested the books over and over.

I’d borrowed as many as I could find from the local library, because I didn’t know yet if they were worth the investment to purchase them.  But now I know my girls love them.

I narrowed down my daughters’ favorites to two:  Flotsam and Sector 7.

Flotsam by David WiesnerFlotsam

Flotsam is a tale of a young boy who discovers an old camera while exploring the shore.

He digs it out of the sand and develops the film.

What he finds in the photos is, quite simply, amazing.

There are sea turtles with tiny cities growing on their shells.  Sea horses watching tiny aliens play.  And so very much more.

I enjoy this book at least as much, if not more, than my girls.

Here are some images from Flotsam:

Sector 7 by David WiesnerSector 7

Sector 7 is the story of a young boy visiting the Empire State Building on a school field trip.

While on the observation deck, he meets a curious character:  a mischievous cloud.

They become fast friends and the cloud takes the boy to on a trip up into the sky.  They visit Sector 7, the Cloud Dispatch Center, where clouds receive their instructions about how they should be shaped and where they are to go.

The boy happens to be an artist, and the clouds happen to love his sketches.  The clouds decide to replicate these sketches, and mayhem ensues.

Here are some images from Sector 7:

While those two are our favorites, Wiesner has some other gems as well.  Similar books include:

Tuesday by David WiesnerTuesday

On Tuesday, strange things happen.  This Tuesday, lilypad-riding frogs take to the skies, exploring the town by air.

Free Fall by David WiesnerFree Fall

In Free Fall, a young boy falls asleep with a book in his arms and visits magical, far-away lands and the knights, castles, and dragons within.

Hurricane by David WiesnerHurricane

In Hurricane, two young brothers see a tree fall to the earth during a storm.  It becomes their playground, representing everything from a pirate ship to an exotic jungle.

June 29 1999 by David WiesnerJune 29, 1999

In June, 29, 1999, a young girl’s science project of vegetable seeds is launched into the atmosphere, has an extraterrestrial encounter, and we find out what happens when lima beans loom over Levittown and artichokes advance on Anchorage.

Molesting Alligators

DO NOT MOLEST OR FEED ALLIGATORS

This is a sign near a park we visit.

The playground is fenced in, so I don’t worry about alligators wandering around where my children are playing.

I am, however, a bit concerned about the idiots that inspired the need for the sign.

Rigatoni with Orange Flavored Vodka Sauce

Rigatoni with Orange Flavored Vodka Sauce Recipe

This dish has such a fun flavor, and it’s a nice change to the everyday (albeit wonderful) regular ol’ marinara sauce.

Spaghetti with spice.

This recipe is based on Penne with Vodka Sauce by Giada De Laurentiis.  I’ve been making it for years, and, in the beginning, I was pretty much following her recipe word for word.

Then, one day, I went to make it and discovered that the only vodka we had in the house was orange flavored.

Hmmm.

Well, I threw caution to the wind and, for one of the first times in my life, I changed up a well-tested recipe.

I was not disappointed.

This stuff is awesome.  First of all, the vodka – any flavored vodka – adds a nice sweetness to the finished product.  Regular vodka may not have much of a flavor on it’s own, but when you simmer it with tomatoes, it makes a very rich sauce.  By using the orange flavored vodka instead, you also give the dish a noticeable citrus touch.

And it makes your kitchen smell amazing as it cooks.

Rigatoni with Orange Flavored Vodka Sauce

I’ve been making this version for quite a while now, and I just can’t go back to the regular recipe.  I love the fruitiness.  It’s one of the more unique flavors in my repertoire.

And it’s easy to make.

All of the ingredients are pictured above, so the only thing I don’t usually already have in my pantry is the heavy cream.  When I pick some up, I make this dish.

I use the Traditional Ragu bottled sauce because it’s a very basic sauce:  just tomatoes, mostly.  No overpowering herbs, no big chunks of veggies – I don’t want things like that to overshadow the awesomeness of the flavor behind the meal.

It’s also quick.  The whole thing from start to finish only takes about a half hour.  Just make sure you simmer it for a full 20 minutes, to cook off the alcohol.

Rigatoni with Orange Flavored Vodka Sauce

It’s a pretty basic process.

And the noodles can cook while the sauce simmers.

I usually throw them in some boiling water when the gravy  sauce is about halfway done.

And you don’t have to use Rigatoni.  I’ve used Penne as well, but I prefer the bigger noodles for this.

Also, once you mix the sauce and the noodles, it may appear at first as though there is too much sauce.  Keep mixing and the sauce will absorb into the macaroni.

When I dish it up, I sometimes add a scoop of Ricotta to the top.  Some people like to mix it in, but I leave it like that, picking up a little cheese and a couple noodles in each bite.  I like the contrasting textures.  But the Ricotta is not necessary.  Just a nice touch.

Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Serves: 6+

Ingredients:

1 quart (or 6 cups or 2-24 Oz. jars) of smooth marinara sauce
1 cup Orange-flavored Vodka
1 tsp. each pepper & garlic powder
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 grated Parmesan
16 Oz. Rigatoni
Ricotta, to taste (optional)

Cook the pasta, according to directions.

In a large saucepot, combine the marinara sauce, vodka, and spices. Bring the marinara sauce and vodka to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer on low for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally. The sauce should reduce by about 1/4.

Stir in the cream and gently simmer for a few minutes until heated through.

Stir in the Parmesan. Continue to heat until the cheese is melted and fully combined.

Stir the cooked and drained pasta into the sauce. Mix well.

Serve with a scoop of Ricotta, if desired.

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies {just add chocolate chips to 3-ingredient peanut butter cookies!}

I love these cookies.

First off – it’s tough to beat a 3-ingredient cookie.  Especially one that tastes this good.

But add chocolate:  pure, unadulterated awesomeness.

And the darn things taste like Reeses peanut butter cups!

Seriously.

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies

Okay, look at that photo.  Four things in this cookie.

That’s it.

You have no excuse not to make these.

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies

First, mix together some peanut butter, sugar, and an egg.

Then stir in chocolate chips.

Roll up some dough, flatten with fork, sprinkle with extra sugar.

Try not to devour them before you bake them.

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies

My little helping hands decided the remaining chocolate chips should be spread over the counter.

Easier access.  :)

And my oldest daughter decided that we should put chocolate chips on top of most of the cookies before baking them, but, just so you know, they didn’t stick.

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies

Look at that beautifulness.

These cookies are seriously addicting.  Very tempting.

I may have to make half a batch next time.

{And I think I forgot to include the yield amount in the printable recipe… it makes 24 cookies.}

And, below, is a photo of little fingers making off with my photo props.  :)

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies {and sneaky fingers!}

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies

Stir in the chocolate chips.

Shape a generous teaspoonful of the batter into a circle. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and flatten by pressing a fork into the top in an X pattern.

Generously sprinkle granulated sugar over the top of the cookies.

Cool on pan for two minutes, then move to wire racks to cool.

Hide and Seek Expert

I became an expert at Hide and Seek, because the longer it takes my kids to find me, the longer I get to nap.

When I made this ecard stating, “I became an expert at Hide and Seek, because the longer it takes my kids to find me, the longer I get to nap,” I may have been exaggerating.

There is no such thing as a long nap.

Unless you consider thirty-seconds of being slumped over and drooling to be a nap.

But hey:  I’ll take what I can get.

Today’s Playlist: Skylar Grey’s “Wear Me Out”

Skylar Grey "Wear Me Out" Quote: I'm just trying to see te world through my own eyes

Listening to “Wear Me Out” by Skylar Grey today.

It’s funny, because her songs really seem like the kind of thing I would have loved to discover when I was a teenager, but, even in my 30s, I still like them.

This particular one seems to mostly speak to my inner, rebellious youth but there are some lyrics that still hit home.

After all, even after all this time, I’m still trying to see the world through my own eyes.  Still trying to find my voice.

So I made a graphic with that particular quote, which I overlaid on some red wooden boards, because I got a kick out of the red piano in the middle of the woods.  :)

Rabbit Ears Writing Desk

rabbit ears writing desk

I’ve been creating a lot of rooms on Polyvore lately.  It’s a bit addicting.  Like creating a room or a wedding on Pinterest.

Anyway, this room (or vignette) features a writing desk and writer’s tools – a typewriter and coffee.  And an adorable T-Rex desk organizer.  Can’t forget that.  :)

I chose the modern walnut desk and chair to reflect the color of the bunny in the Rabbit Ears poster.  Because all of us writers are constantly searching for a place with the perfect reception from our writing gods.  Or daemons.

The rest of the posters are of a typology or logophile nature.  Throw in a few more fun accents and there you have it.

What do you think?  Could you write the next great American novel here?

“Make Your Own” Custom Chocolate Bars

Create Your Own Chocolate Bar from 3 Types of Chocolate and Over 100 Toppings!

Today, I discovered custom chocolate bars.

That’s right:  make your own Belgian chocolate bars by mixing and matching 3 types of chocolate and over 100 toppings.

I believe that “Sweet!” would be an appropriate response to this.  {Pun fully intended.}

Create Your Own Chocolate Bar from 3 Types of Chocolate and Over 100 Toppings!

Anywho, the combinations are endless, which I love.

You can add up to 5 toppings to make “recipes,” like Peanut Butter Jelly Time Chocolate Bar which includes a milk chocolate base and toppings of dried strawberries, butter toasted peanuts, peanut butter drops, and gushers.

Heck, you can even go the extra mile and add a “Congratulations” plaque and a candle.

Create Your Own Chocolate Bar from 3 Types of Chocolate and Over 100 Toppings!

Some of the ingredients which most intrigue my taste buds include:

Diced Ginger
Himalayan Sea salt
Pumpkin Spice
Dried Raspberries
Nerds
Sour Patch Kids
Cookie Dough
Pop Rocks
23 Karat Gold Flakes
Crystallized Violet Petals
Bacon
Monkey Munch

The list goes on…

And I mean, seriously, does anyone really NOT know someone who wouldn’t want a pumpkin spice chocolate bar?

I’m thinking that I’d love to try the dark chocolate base topped with violet petals and gold flakes.

What about you?  What would you try?  What would you craft as a gift for a loved one?

Let me know!  (And don’t forget to check out all the ingredients for the Create Your Own Chocolate Bar on Zazzle!)

Today’s Playlist: Christina Perri’s Human

Christina Perri "Human" Lyrics Quote

Been listening to “Human” by Christina Perri today.

I can’t really decide if the song is depressing or inspiring.  But I like it.

I’ve made a meme/graphic/whatever with some of the lyrics.  {above.}

And these lyrics, these words, help me remember that I am only human and can only take so much.  It helps to be reminded of that during this never-ending divorce process.

That it’s okay to cry {fall apart} sometimes.

It’s okay to be human.
