I Have Seen Beyond Infinity

From Beyond Lovecraft Quote

As you may have noticed, if you follow my blog, I read a wide variety of genres . . . but there’s a special place in my heart for horror.

I love how there’s so much you can do with horror, how it can encompass everything else, from science fiction to romance.

Anyway, I’ve been reading a little Lovecraft lately, and while he has many quotable phrases, this particular bit stuck with me enough that I felt I should illustrate it.

So I made this graphic.

It reads:

I have seen beyond the bounds of infinity and drawn down daemons from the stars . . . I have harnessed the shadows that stride from world to world to sow death and madness . . .

The imagery conjures something vast, something terrifying, but in words that translate the concept of cosmic horror with a sense of beauty.

Or, it does for me.

This quote can be found in From Beyond, a story from the collection The Dream Cycle of H.P. Lovecraft.

The photo features a small but very active galaxy in the Camelopardalis constellation and can be found on NASA’s website.

And you can find more images like this that I’ve made in my Quotes section.

Enjoy.  :)

Today’s Playlist: Skylar Grey’s “Wear Me Out”

Skylar Grey "Wear Me Out" Quote: I'm just trying to see te world through my own eyes

Listening to “Wear Me Out” by Skylar Grey today.

It’s funny, because her songs really seem like the kind of thing I would have loved to discover when I was a teenager, but, even in my 30s, I still like them.

This particular one seems to mostly speak to my inner, rebellious youth but there are some lyrics that still hit home.

After all, even after all this time, I’m still trying to see the world through my own eyes.  Still trying to find my voice.

So I made a graphic with that particular quote, which I overlaid on some red wooden boards, because I got a kick out of the red piano in the middle of the woods.  :)

Today’s Playlist: Christina Perri’s Human

Christina Perri "Human" Lyrics Quote

Been listening to “Human” by Christina Perri today.

I can’t really decide if the song is depressing or inspiring.  But I like it.

I’ve made a meme/graphic/whatever with some of the lyrics.  {above.}

And these lyrics, these words, help me remember that I am only human and can only take so much.  It helps to be reminded of that during this never-ending divorce process.

That it’s okay to cry {fall apart} sometimes.

It’s okay to be human.

Words of Wisdom Art

Awhile back I came across this picture on Pinterest:

i am made of shattered stars

I followed to a page selling art (get it here) and discovered that it was a quote from Alexandra Franzen.

Curious, I visited her blog, and have been following her ever since.

She has a way with words that I find to be continually inspiring.

And today I just wanted to share some Franzen-inspired artwork by Kent Youngstrom.  He has a whole series based on the way Alexandra puts words together.  These are my favorites:

Gifts for Writers and Bibliophiles

I came across some awesome jewelry that all seemed ridiculously appropriate for writers and bibliophiles of all sorts.

I find I have somewhat of a kindred spirit among librarians, teachers, and graphic designers, too, so I guess a better title might be “Jewelry for Word Lovers.”

Either way, from Alice to Ampersands, enjoy the view.  :)

Why I Write {a work forever in progress}

snoopy writing at typewriter

Just a few days ago I found myself sitting across from a man that helps people find suitable career paths for a living.

He asked me:  “If you could do anything, what would it be?”

“I’d be a writer,” I said, without even the slightest hesitation.

Because that has ALWAYS been the goal.

When I was about ten, I began writing a, ahem, novel.  It was probably a dozen pages long.  But it was a start.  And I promised myself – promised – that I would have my first novel published by the time I turned eighteen.

Yeah… and then, sometime in my twenties, when I still hadn’t managed to finish any of the novels I’d started, I extended that deadline to my thirtieth birthday.

Which came and went years ago.

So what the hell happened?  I mean, I’ve never completely stopped writing:  I wrote a ton of poems and short stories in college (NONE of which were ever accepted to any of the literary magazines to which I submitted them – yea for motivation…), but I just don’t seem to be on track with my goals.  Why?  What’s happened that’s gotten in my way of pursuing the one thing I believe I was put on this earth to do?

For starters, I don’t write enough.

That’s really one of the big reasons I started this blog.  Sure, I love, love, love posting about recipes and crafts and kid toys (no, really, I do), but if nothing else, it forces me to sit at a keyboard and put words together.

But sometimes that’s easier said then done.

Boromir: One simply does not start writing without coffee.

For example, coffee is very important.

If there’s not enough coffee surging through my veins, then I don’t really function.  But that can also pose a problem since I get my best writing done at two in the morning.

Well, that and having to get up with my kids when the sun rises.

So, why do I bother?

Why do I keep trying?

you write because you need to write quote

I keep trying because I have to.

And I know I’m not alone.  If the advent of internet memes has taught me nothing, it has taught me this:  I am not alone in my literary torment.

The procrastination gene goes hand in hand with the writing gene.

So, at this point, I haven’t given myself a deadline for completing (or publishing) my next novel.  Mostly in an effort to avoid sobbing fits of devastation.

Instead, I have promised myself to write every day.

I mean, I’m aware that some days there will be very little or no writing done because I will be too busy controlling the beautiful but consuming tornado that is my toddler and preschooler, but I still promised myself I would try.

It’s kind of like a New Year’s Resolution – but for the rest of my life.

How hard could that be…

There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed. Ernest Hemingway quote.

I know I can, I know I can, I know I can.

Because I have to.  I don’t have a choice.

It’s who I am.

My Favorite New Starbucks Coffee Mugs

I am totally crushing on some of the newest Starbucks coffee mugs.

It’s hard to pick a favorite, tho I know I just don’t have room in my kitchen for every coffee mug I find that I love.

*sigh*

The struggles of a coffee addict.

But, between my recent sinus infection and stomach bug, I’ve had a lot of time on my hands to sit around and stare at things.  Like these mugs.

Anyway, here are my top three:

Casi Cielo Mug, 12 fl oz

Inspirational Espresso Mug, 3 fl oz (Reads: Every sip has a sweet ending.)

Inspirational Brewed Mug, 16 fl oz (Reads: Fresh-brewed inspiration for the day ahead.)

I think these three caught my eye because I’m such a lover of words and textures.  And white.  I love how white plays off of other colors, sometimes blending in and sometimes starkly standing out.

There’s a lot I like about these mugs, but I want to know which are your favorites.  If you could pick one of these to add to your collection, which would it be?

Still I Rise

Still I Rise

“Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.”

Just a few lines from a favorite poem.  I could read it over and over again.  Does it come as a surprise?

And I liked how these powerful words looked when paired with this image.

A dancing spirit.  Light.  Laughing.

Rising.

I will rise through pain.  I will smile.  I will see goodness in the world.

No matter how many times you shoot me with your words or cut me with your eyes or kill me with your hatefulness:  I rise.

You do your best to hurt me.  To bring me down, to drown me.

But still, like air, I rise.

Beautiful Words

beautiful words

I love words.

I love what they represent, but, more than that, I love them for what they are.

Words are beautiful.  Amazing.  Mismatched stings of letters that describe and determine everything that does or could exist, even if these things exist only within the words themselves.

It’s why I love books so much.  An entire world within my hands, within the pages, within the words.

And it’s not just fiction that has the potential to be beautiful.  Life itself is such a wonderful gift, but so many people use words to make it miserable and wrenching and  desolate.

It shouldn’t be that way.

Oh – I’m not perfect.  I’ve said my share of horrible things over the years.  We all have.  But we all have the gift of free will:  the potential to better ourselves.

Sometimes it’s hard, but we truly won’t see the blessings that surround us every day unless we look for them.  Unless we open our eyes and we smile.

Unless we make the choice to be happy.  And to share that happiness.

And words are there, waiting to help us share it.  Because every time you put words together you have the opportunity to make something beautiful.  Something happy.

You have the choice of bringing forth happiness into this world, or bringing forth despair.

What a powerful choice that is.

Writing at Night

lovecraft writing at night quote

Well, I guess that means I’m officially a writer.

I mean, really, I write best at night.

Maybe because it’s so quiet.  There are no distractions.  The world is silent, which allows me to slip more thoroughly into my own universe of thought.

The night is more magical.  I am more alive at night.

My writing is more alive at night.

Hell, most of my blogs are written after midnight, even if I don’t post them until the next morning.

The night is for dreamers.  The night is for writers.

The night is my time to dream, to write.  The night is mine and I am the night’s.

And mornings suck.
