I Miss Firefly

The writing was genius.  The scenery was amazing.  The language was mesmerizing.  The action was sick.  The humor was perfect.

The captain was hot.

I miss Firefly.

Years ago, when I was introduced to the show and the movie at the same time, watching all of it in a single weekend, I just couldn’t believe that that was all there was.  What do you mean cancelled?  Why would anyone end something so brilliant??

Anyway, to ease my pain, I’m sharing a few images with you that made me smile.  Enjoy.  :)

Just finished watching Firefly and Serenity... Holy mother of god best series ever made in the Universe... Thank you Imgur for s

Frilly Pettiskirts for Babies

These pretty pettiskirts from Butterfly Wishes are so fluffy and frilly I can barely stand it!

Technically, I could still get away with putting my toddler and preschooler in a skirt like this, but it’s just not the same as a newborn.  And, with the recent birth of my great niece, I’ve got a touch of baby fever.  Can’t seem to stop thinking about fluffy and frilly things.  :)

500 Footprints Later …

I’ve posted in the past about being amazed at the popularity of a pin.

This pin recently topped 500 repins, which is pretty cool.  But the weird thing?  I’ve found other pins about this article, altered photos in fact, that weren’t pinned by me at all.

Hmmm…

Well, it’s weird, but hey, technically they all lead back to my Salt Dough Footprint Heart article if you follow the “source” links…

Oh well.  The information is free.  Universal.  Heck, I didn’t even come up with the idea.  I originally saw it at The Imagination Tree.

But I guess that’s what the internet is all about.  Sharing.  Ideas.  Community.

Sharing ideas with your community.

Ideas should be free.

Rats that Laugh When Tickled … and Do Laundry

I had a pet rat when I was younger.

And she was a wonderful pet:  affectionate, playful, with whooshing little whiskers and a soft nose.

Used to ride on my shoulder as I walked around the house.

Anyway, because of my fond memories of her, I’m particularly partial to anything involving these adorable rodents.  (Yes, I said it:  adorable.)  So I’m sharing some videos I found recently.

First, Scientists Discover that Rats Laugh When Tickled:

And second, 15 Incredible Rat Tricks.  Although “Fetch” was totally cute, my favorites were “Do Laundry” and “Dramatic Teddy Bear Rescue.”

Enjoy  :)

Free Kid Activity: Painting Newspaper

painting on paper

Sometimes you need something simple, quick, and super easy (and free) to entertain your kids.

We came across this activity by accident, but it’s actually great for a variety of things:  sensory play, cause and effect, keeping them distracted so I can wash the dishes and fold the laundry….

Things like that.

To start, lay out some newspaper on the floor – preferably tile, as this wouldn’t work so well on carpet or wood.  Concrete would work, too.  Or an outside wooden deck.

Then, hand the kids some brushes – we used both regular paint brushes and foam brushes – and small plastic cups of water.  Not too much water, tho, unless you want a lake in the middle of your kitchen.  Just enough to let them draw designs on the paper.

Challenge them to draw certain shapes or to write their name if they know how.  Then stand back and watch their inner artist bloom!  :)

Octopus Hot Dogs and Seaweed Zucchini

Everyone should want to have fun with food.

Personally, I think everyone should make an octopus-shaped hot dot at least once in their life.  And if you have kids, they – more than likely – love hot dogs.  So:  problem solved.  Go and make yourself some octopuses for dinner.  Or octopi.  Either way.

And to get extra creative, dab on some mustard eyes and throw them in a bed of zucchini seaweed:

Okay, I know:  my “seaweed” looks a little mushy.  That’s because I shredded the zucchini kinda small.  Looked a little more like angel hair than linguine.  Still, it gets the point across.

To make the hot dogs, I sliced through them before cooking them.  You could them boil or microwave them.

To make the zucchini, I shredded it, and then threw it in a frying pan with some olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder for a few minutes.

Granted, my kids were far too excited about the hot dogs to pay much attention to the zucchini, but they did eat a little.  If you’d prefer, you could always serve the dogs over some spaghetti that you cooked with a little green food coloring instead.

Momism #6: The Power of the Bra

Momism 6

I should be ashamed to admit this, but, really, I’m not.

I mean, it’s something I sometimes do so people won’t think I didn’t bother to change out of my pajamas, even though I’m playing with my kids in the front yard and it’s nearly dinner time.

But … yeah.  Some days I don’t bother changing out of my pajamas.

And some days I don’t even have time to notice that I haven’t changed out of my pajamas.

You can’t really blame me, though, since my PJs mostly consist of Gilligan & O’Malley shorts and pants from Target and either tank tops or well-loved, old t-shirts.  So, when I’m running around after two active toddlers, sometimes I’m just too comfortable to interrupt exploring the world with my children to do something useless and troublesome like putting on “presentable” clothes.

So if I bother putting on a bra for you, you’d better feel privileged.

Exporation Bottles for Sensory Play

Oh, how babies love noise!

Big noises, little noises, repetitive noises…

So, kids make noise.   As mothers, this is something we know.  It’s also something we come to love (sometimes).

What I guess I’m trying to say is, sometimes we can make it fun.  For instance, I made these “exploration bottles” for my girls a little while back, but never got around to posting about them.  And, not only did my youngest daughter love them (who was probably about 8-months-old at the time), but her big sister (2 years her senior), loved them, too.

They’re kind of musical in a way, especially since there are so many options when it comes to filling them.  I used some two kinds of beads and some pom poms – all from the dollar store.  I put them in dried out water bottles in the 16 oz. and 8 oz. sizes.  I also added a little hot glue to the caps (after the photo was taken) to make sure that the contents wouldn’t end up in my daughter’s mouth.  Like everything else she gets her hands on.

I’ve also seen them done where you fill them with water, so the kids can watch the stuff float around.  I like what I did, because each bottle made a different sound when you shook it.  And yes, even the pom pom bottle made a sound, just a very light and swooshy one.  It’s great for comparison, especially with my older daughter.

Have you done something similar?  Let me know!
